Packing for the Karakoram: A Field-Tested List

Every season we watch duffels arrive in Skardu — some packed like veterans, some like optimists. This is the list our guides actually carry.

The non-negotiables

  • Broken-in Gore-Tex boots — never new ones
  • A sleeping bag rated -20°C to -30°C for high camps
  • True layering: thermals, fleece, down, shell
  • Trekking poles, gaiters, headlamp and UV sunglasses
  • A 50–60L rucksack plus a soft duffel for porters

The thing everyone forgets

Sun protection for the underside of your face. On glacier days the light comes from below as well as above — lip balm with SPF and a wide-brim hat save more trips than any gadget.

Renting in Skardu is possible for bulky items like sleeping bags and poles; quality varies, so tell us in advance and we will reserve the good kit.
